Our #FridaySocial is a weekly round-up of the key social media news stories from the previous seven days. Let us know your thoughts in the comments or via Twitter – @Umpf @EllieHallsworth

1. #WorldCup

England may have made an early exit, but what a thrilling World Cup it’s been so far. Testament to that is the fact that just two weeks into the #WorldCup, it’s already becoming one of the most talked about events on Twitter of all time. With the group stage now complete, Twitter has estimated that there have been more than 300 million tweets sent relating to the #WorldCup since the play began. For a little comparison here, this is double the amount of tweets sent during the London 2012 Olympics in over 16 days. Other interesting stats released by Twitter are as follows:

The opening match between host country Brazil and Croatia saw the most Twitter conversation during a match in real time, Marcelo scoring that own goal is the most-tweeted moment, Lionel Messi is the most-mentioned player and the most retweeted tweet came from Balotelli

2. Brands bite into the debate

Big name brands have been quick off the mark to sink their teeth into the Luis Suarez bite incident that has sent Twitter into a rage. Gags-galore, the debate provided an irresistible real-time marketing opportunity and both Bud Light and Listerine swiftly brought up promoted tweets for the #Suarez hashtag:

3. Retweet with Comment

Twitter’s latest experiment is a tweak that many users have been hankering after for a while; retweets with comments. Essentially, this new feature will allow users more space to comment when they are retweeting another user by displaying the retweeted message as an image.

This is likely to replace the ‘Quote Tweet’ feature, which gives you very limited space in which to add your own thoughts. ‘Retweet with Comment’ will allow you to use the full 140 characters to add comment, another link, etc. just like a normal tweet.

Twitter is testing this feature with select users, so it is unclear if this will become permanent.

4. Most Pinned travel destinations

Nowadays, we’re all flocking to Pinterest to find our travel inspiration fix. But which are the most popular destinations? Based on more than 750 million place pins, Pinterest has revealed its top 30 worldwide destinations. The top five are as follows (but make sure to check out the full list here).

2. Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

3. London, England

Time to update that travel bucket list, ey?

5. Barbie on LinkedIn

Barbie needs to stay fashionably current (she is 55 years old after all), and with the summer launch of the new Entrepreneur Barbie doll, she’s aiming to be just that. To inspire in the era of prominence for female entrepreneurs, Entrepreneur Barbie not only comes with a smartphone and tablet computer, but her very own LinkedIn page (to help her stay connected with new and existing business associates, naturally) and an #unapologetic hashtag.
