Social Media round-up of the Week – 28 March

  • PR

Welcome back to our weekly instalment of what’s hot in the world of sociaLinkedin 2l media. In case you missed what happened over the past week, here’s our top five:

1. Debenhams has hit a landmark in sales through its app. The retailer, which operates more than 150 stores across the UK and internationally, has announced that since launching just five months ago, the app has earned the company £1 Million. The app is an integral part of Debenham’s multi-channel strategy aimed at boosting its revenue in the coming years.

2.  To celebrate World Water Day, Levi’s encouraged its fans to ‘unlock water’ through a variety of ways via a dedicated site –  pledging to use water more sustainably, inviting friends to play the WaterTank game, donating money to Water.org, tweeting a message with the #waterless hashtag, liking the Levi’s brand on Facebook, scanning a QR code and check-in to any Levi’s venue across the U.S., and watching the dedicated video online.

3. Far from being intimidated by the launch of Facebook Places, Foursquare announced that its users have doubled since the rival platform was brought to market. Dennis Crowley, Foursquare’s chief, has denied that the launch of ‘Places’ has negatively affected his service’s membership.

4. Former Social networking darling, Myspace, has seen its monthly unique visitor number fall by 10 million between January and February 2011, a 14 per cent reduction. 63 million people now visit Myspace on a monthly basis, leaving it trailing far behind Facebook.

5. Linkedin, the social media platform of choice for many business professionals, is celebrating following news that it now has more than 100 million members (see infographic right). The network, which is seen as a more ‘serious’ alternative to the likes of Facebook, boasts 44 million users in the US alone.

Don’t forget – if you see anything that really impresses you, why not let us know by emailing on social@umpf.co.uk and perhaps your suggestion will make the cut next week.
