Tweetdeck takes a step back from Apps, Bloggabase and other online musings

Facebook goes all Google+

The big news from Facebook last night was a major overhaul of its news-feed interface, the main talking point being the similarities to the layout of Google+. It isn’t difficult to see why, side by side they do appear to have been made by the same team, as Mashable’s image below demonstrates.

Looking past the design similarities, Facebook has added in multiple news feeds, which in truth have been there for a while but were much more hidden, now they form an integral part of the new look, giving access to more specifics such as photos, music and celebrities you follow.

Facebook will start to roll out the changes almost instantly but it may take time to filter through to everyone, you can however get hold of it earlier here, just scroll to the bottom of the page.

Tweetdeck to remove apps

Big news for those of us who use Tweetdeck on a daily basis, the twitter management tool has announced it will no longer be supporting its apps.

Instead Tweetdeck will be focusing on its web browser offering and Google chrome plug-in, meaning the Windows and Mac versions of the programme which many rely on will have little attention going forward. The latest update to the Windows app already has issues ( at least it does for us) and major updates have been thin on the ground for some time.  It will be interesting to see with less platforms to focus on and an increased staff level what Tweetdeck comes up with over the coming months.

Google Maps Update

Google Maps, the knight in shining armor after the Apple Maps debacle, has just added another weapon to its armory with a vastly improved local search capability. For example, you can choose from a number of options to find the nearest coffee shops, along with being able to locate where friends live in your contact list are.

Nielson, famous for measuring television analytics in America, have been looking into how promoted tweet campaigns influence their audiences. Not a report for everyone but if you work within the realms of digital, marketing, SEO, etc. this is a hugely informative report on a form of marketing which is still in its infancy. It’s not very long, we promise!

Bloggabase Launched

Another one for digital marketers and bloggers, a new service launched this week aims to bring bloggers, and those who wish to reach bloggers, together in joyous digital harmony.  The service was in beta for a number of months, so is well tested and contains thousands of bloggers, more than 2,000 according to the site. With the recent Interflora issues and dodgy SEO tactics this could be a perfectly timed piece of kit!

Membership rates start at £100 p/m and rise to £500 p/m if you want all the bells and whistles.

Facebook banking

Commbank have given Facebook users in Australia the capability to bank using the social media platform, here are the four activities they will allow:

-Pay Facebook friends or anyone with an email address or Australian mobile number and an Australian bank account
-Request payments from more forgetful friends
-Gift payments to friends and family on Facebook for special occasions such as birthdays
-Make payments to Facebook events

The big question is whether or not users will feel comfortable banking on a site which is more often than not associated with having privacy concerns. It’s a real question of trust and Commbank being able to show their customers that it is safe to use.  Would you bank using Facebook? Let us know in the comment box in the blog.

Qoura

Quora is adding new features almost monthly it would seem, the latest from their production line is the ability to add product reviews for items such as books and DVDs. They hope to give a formal structure to the reviewing process, building on what the site does best, answering questions.

And finally….

New Year thoughts, social media money… and even more money!

Friday, January 4th, 2013

Happy New Year! We hope you had a great festive celebration and ate copious amounts of chocolate, mince pies and turkey (hopefully not all in one meal)!

1. Who did you send your New Year wishes and thoughts to? Your family and friends… millionaire footballers? To kick-start the year in full swing, the poor (but so, so rich) Rio Ferdinand asked the nation to spare a thought for him, pleading for sympathy because he had to spend his New Year’s Eve in his hotel suite – how depressing! Yep, you guessed it – his followers didn’t take to this too well.

2. In a bid to make even more money, Facebook have announced payment in Facebook messages, which is currently being tested in the US, allowing someone to pay $1 to make sure their email reaches someone else’s “inbox” (rather than the “other” folder) even when the person isn’t in their group of Facebook friends. Apparently the $1 charge will be a “financial signal” which improves its formula for delivering “relevant and useful” messages to Facebookers’ inboxes.facebook-messages

3. According to an analyst at Greencrest looking at trading in secondary markets, Twitter is now valued at a whopping $11 billion! Although this may not be a monstrously great as Facebook’s value of $100 billion, there are rumours of an Apple/Twitter buyout when the social media platform goes public in 2014.

Social Media Digest

Instagram vs. Twitter

Instagram shuts off Twitter support >Twitter Launches Pictures Filter>Instagram updates its App in Response.

The on-going spat between Instagram and Twitter appears to have reached a rather unsavoury end with Instagram pulling all support for the Instagram cards for twitter users which allowed users to open up images directly within Twitter. The only remaining option is to go to that extra effort of clicking the link, and no one wants to do that, do they!

JackpotJoy 50FT Rubber Duck gains a social media buzz

Never underestimate the power of a 50ft rubber duck floating down the River Thames. This simple but probably hugely difficult and expensive to organise stunt gained its fair share of social buzz. Images starting appearing in the morning and national coverage shortly followed as the duck sailed past iconic London landmarks. Bingo Company Jackpot Joy was behind the stunt as they encourage the country to have more fun as part of their new FUNdation campaign.

Swap your disposable cameras on tables for a simple app. The technology works similar to many others out there which allow the aggregation of photos in to one gallery. A specific code puts users in to a feed for the wedding from then on it is possible to add friends who couldn’t attend the wedding as well as download imagery. All in all quite a handy little application really.

Word Press 3.5 launched

According to Mashable WordPress has “evolved from a blogging platform into a CMS that powers about 17% of the web” . The new update includes support for retina displays, Tumblr integration and a brand new and refreshed media manager which allows for a more pleasant experience when uploading media. All in all it should all work a bit more smoothly.

Google Maps is back for IOS!

The failure of Apples native Maps which launched with IOS6 is well documented, missing locations, incorrect directions were met with much annoyance from the iFaithful who loudly voiced their disapproval upon launch. Google made us wait, possibly just to watch Apple squirm for a while and then as a sort of pre Christmas present they released the app into the appstore, It took just seven hours for it to become the App stores most popular free application.

We can all navigate safely home for Christmas now, thanks Google!

And Finally…

Control Christmas Lights

Control this offices Christmas lights via the awesome power of the internet, get yourself in the queue, wait for your one minute turn and have some fun. Merry Christmas.

Social Media Digest: New Twitter (Again), Man City Hangouts and Exclusive Experiments

Friday, September 21st, 2012

1. A new study by Pew Internet and American Life Project is looking at social networking sites like Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram to see how they’re being used by online adults. The survey of over 1,000 people found that 46% of internet users are ‘creators’, who publish and share original images and videos. An additional 41% are curators, who share the creators’ content. Unsurprisingly, Pinterest is dominated by women although only 12% of online adults use the online pinboard. It was revealed that Instagram is dominated by young adults, but no conclusive data yet on how many photos are of cats!

2. Twitter has rolled out a redesigned version of both its desktop site and mobile apps, featuring a new ‘header image’ and ‘Me’ section. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo unveiled the updates this week, saying that “[The] changes are all about bringing that personality forward. More media forward, more photos forward, so it’s much easier to see these media experiences and flip through them”. What do you think of the new changes, and what’s your favourite use of the new header image so far? Batman wins our vote…

3. Manchester City Football Club has announced that it’s extending its social media arsenal and will be hosting pre-match question and answer sessions using Google+ Hangouts. Billed as a footballing first, ‘The Third Half’ Hangouts will be able to accommodate ten fans per session and will be hosted by Patrick Vieira, Retired World Cup winner and club ambassador. The first Hangout will take place on 23rd September ahead of Manchester City’s match against Arsenal.

4. Apple has launched iOS6 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch this week to both fanfare and disappointment. The new operating system now features even-better Facebook integration, allowing you to share a photo directly from the Camera or Photo Library or post a location from Maps. Siri can even post updates for you and events and info is shared across the Calendar and your Contacts. The update also features a new Panorama shooting feature for the iPhone 4S and upwards, but as it clocks in at 16MB you’ll need to resize before you can share it with the internet – check out this handy guide by Lance Ulanoff from Mashable here.

5. How curious are you? If you’re anything the team here at Umpf the answer is very, which is why we couldn’t resist signing up to The 11K Club. There are no clues about what it is, who it’s for, what will happen on 11th November or what the mystery benefit will be, but membership is restricted to 11,000 people and I want in. The team behind The 11K Club are treating membership as a bit of an experiment – co-founder Steve Whyley told Mashable: “I’m trying to see if people will sign up to a club that they know nothing about purely because it’s exclusive and because they fear they’ll miss out. What 11K Club is proving, at least in our minds, is that it almost doesn’t matter what your site does, how it looks, what the homepage says”. Wannabe-members have until 31st October to sign up – you can use my personalised invite link here to help me improve my chances of getting in!

Social Media Digest: Apple v Samsung, Fakebook, Mr Bean, and Disney!

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

1. Although they have been taking playground swipes at each other for years, things just got serious this week as arch-rivals Apple and Samsung take it from the streets to the court over some patents. The two tech giants are embroiled in two lawsuits, one taking place now and the other next year, over two types of patents: utility patents and design patents – the use features on a smartphone or tablet, and how it looks. In a nutshell they’re arguing over who came up with what first, hence why there have been plenty of old Apple prototype images popping up all other the web. Apple claims that Samsung stole features such as slide-to-unlock, tap-to-zoom, and even tried to lay claim to scrolling! They’re also arguing that products that are black, rectangular with rounded edges, and thin are copying Apple’s designs. On the other side of the argument, Samsung are raising the royalty stakes for its 3G technology and other utility features.

But while this may just seem like a couple of kids arguing over who ‘baggsied’ it first, this lawsuit has real implications for us, the consumer. Annoying really that instead of continuing to invest in and innovate exciting new products and technologies, Apple and Samsung are battling it out to see who will have to charge more and offer less its customers. Shame.

2. After announcing that they are closing in on 1 billion users in July, Facebook have now confessed that 8.7% of user accounts are fake! That would mean that of the 955 million accounts the social networking site claims to have, 83 millions are ‘fake’ – meaning duplicates, user-misclassified, or undesirable. Though perhaps an ever so slightly pre-emptive boast to make, in the grand scheme of things it’s still a hella lot of users!

3. The 2012 Olympics are taking the world and the internet by storm. Most people seem to be experiencing some sort of Olympomania on a day-to-day basis, especially now there has been a flurry of medals won by Team GB!  Twitter seems to be the primary output of all that mania. The Olympic Opening Ceremony alone had more mentions on the micro-blogging site that there were throughout the entire Beijing 2008 games! There were reportedly 9.7 million tweets about the ceremony, but the biggest spike of activity was during Rowan Atkinson’s performance of Mr Bean playing Chariots of Fire with the London Symphony Orchestra. Tim Berners-Lee’s appearance also made a big impact, with his tweet ‘This is for everyone’ being retweeted more than10,000 times.

Needless to say the public have certainly been getting behind the British Olympic athletes, with most seeing their online following drastically rise. However, there’s a really cool way that you can get up close and personal with the athletes as they compete for national glory – follow the accounts of the Olympic coverage cameras! With the likes of @L2012PoolCam and @L2012StadiumCam and more you can take your pick of which to follow to take your social Olympic viewing to a new level.

4. Haven’t already book your annual family holiday? Thinking of taking the kids to Benidorm? Greece, perhaps? Maybe even one of the many trusty British seaside resorts?

Think again!

Every child (and adult) deserves to go to Disney Land at least once in their lives; in fact it should be mandatory. It’s the most magical experience EVER, even for you parents. However, I understand that theme parks are not always the most desirable places, especially with kids in tow. There’s the endless queues, the expense, the tears of fear from the rides and the scary people that dress up like our beloved characters (just me?).  But worry no more as Disney has launched a brand new app to ease the whole experience. With features such as maps, restaurant reservations, wait times, and support for the wireless next-generation fast pass, the My Disney Experience app is set to revolutionise your theme park experience. Now obviously a theme park app is not a first, however, there are some unique features that will pave the way for future theme park visits. That users do not have to within the park itself to get up-to-date wait times for ride queues and the in-app integration of the next-gen fast pass system are just two features that are leading the way, both  making planning your trip there a lot easier and more organised. You see, now you have no excuse but to go!

Ok, so this may not be the most breaking news on the app front this week, but it’s Disney!

DISNEY!
