This week, Tumblr’s announced changes to its community guidelines aiming to create ‘a better Tumblr’. A post reads:
“Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.”
A Support post clarifies that ‘adult content’ includes ‘photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts’.
Many users have taken to social media to express their disappointment that the once sex-positive site would be making these changes. As The Next Web points out, around a quarter of Tumblr’s user base is there for the porn – fortunately, the PR machines over at PornHub are on the case:

Mark Zuckerberg has since responded on his own Facebook page, but it hasn’t done a great deal to ease concerns.
Theresa May has this week come under fire as it’s been revealed the government has spent more than £50,000 on social media ads promoting the Brexit deal.
MP Layla Moran said: “Mrs May should stop wasting money trying to sell her botched deal on social media as good news when it’s actually fake news.”
Brexiteer MP Ben Bradley added: “Cabinet ministers won’t sell the Prime Minister’s deal with the EU so No 10 is having to use taxpayers’ money to try to buy support instead. This is not the mark of a strong Government or a sensible plan.”
